In the Thick of It

This commissioned pair of abstract paintings explores color, movement, and texture as a unified conversation across two panels. Built through layered palette-knife strokes, the surfaces are richly textured, allowing greens, blues, and earthy neutrals to overlap and interact organically. Each panel stands on its own, yet together they create a balanced rhythm, shifting between softness and structure, intuition and intention.

The work invites slow looking, revealing depth and variation as light moves across the surface. Inspired by natural environments and the feeling of being immersed within them, this diptych was created to live as a cohesive statement while still offering moments of quiet discovery within each piece.

Abstract Maps

Created as a commissioned interpretation of both Bald Head and Topsail Islands, these paintings abstract the familiar coastal map into a vibrant, expressive landscape. Saturated blues anchor the composition, while layered greens, soft pinks, and chartreuse accents trace landforms and waterways with intuitive brushwork. Rather than a literal rendering, the piece captures the feeling of island living: movement, warmth, and the rhythm of land meeting water.

Built through loose, gestural strokes and layered color, the surface invites both recognition and imagination. The painting reflects a personal sense of place, translating memory and geography into an energetic, painterly map meant to be lived with, not decoded.

Held in Air

This abstract painting is built through soft, gestural layers that drift across the surface like light moving through air. Cool blues and watery whites intermingle with fresh greens and hints of yellow, creating a sense of openness and calm. Rather than anchoring to a specific place, the composition evokes a feeling of something seasonal, fleeting, and quietly alive.

Loose brushwork and translucent passages allow colors to overlap and breathe, inviting the eye to wander without urgency. The result is a spacious, meditative piece that holds both movement and stillness, offering a moment of visual rest while revealing subtle depth upon closer viewing.
